There is one place on earth where the world records are set. Where the heaviest moments in big-wave surfing have happened, and where the best in the world come every winter to find out what they are made of. You are going out onto that water.
Not from the clifftop with everyone else. On a ski, in the channel, guided by people who work this bay every winter — and who can point at a spot on the water and tell you exactly what happened there.
What you are actually looking at
A canyon three miles deep.
Nazaré breaks the way it does because of what is under it: a submarine canyon that funnels open-ocean swell and stands it up against the headland. In summer there is usually no swell at all, and that is exactly when you can go and see it properly.
Lourenço takes you around the bay and explains the whole thing on the water — where the canyon runs, why the wave behaves as it does, where the tow teams sit and why. It can be guided by Sérgio Cosme of Jet Sessions.
How it runs
From Peniche and back, about half a day.
