Born from fishing. Shaped by surfing.

A family surf school in Baleal, Peniche, Portugal.

Baleal from the air: the island village, the strip of sand that ties it to the coast, and waves on both sides.

Our family

I’m Lourenço Grandela. In 1961 my great-grandfather became the first lifeguard in Peniche, and my grandfather, my father and my uncles worked as lifeguards on these beaches after him. It is the same water. We just teach people to surf in it now.

Four men in wetsuits on an orange inflatable boat holding a corvina almost as long as they are tall.
My grandfather and his friends. The corvina is nearly as long as the men holding it.
Lourenço riding a large wave, a small figure at the bottom of a tall wall of water.
Lourenço, today.
